Card Project

Sixty Plus volunteers offer a little bit of help that makes a huge difference to many older people. We run a range of projects helping people at home, in the garden and getting out and about. Brief details about our services follow.

For more information or if you or someone you know could benefit, contact us on 0208 969 9105 or by e-mail: info@sixtyplus.org.uk.

Services are free of charge and available to anyone aged over 60 who is resident in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Volunteer services

Befriending - Volunteers offer weekly support to older people to help them maintain their social contacts. All of the users of this service live alone and are at risk of becoming isolated. Weekly visits mean that they are able to keep in touch with the outside world through their volunteers.

Practical Help - Volunteers lend a helping hand with jobs such as sorting or packing belongings, hanging curtains, changing light bulbs or fitting door-chains and spy-holes which improve security.

Escorts - Volunteers act as escorts to appointments, for walks and to go to the shops.

Group Escorted Shopping Trips - For people who cannot use public transport due to disability or frailty, the group escorted shopping trips enable people to continue to do their own shopping. Trips are run every Wednesday and Thursday to supermarkets in and around West London. Click here for the latest timetable.

Garden Guardians - As well as enabling older people to continue to enjoy their gardens when they are no longer able to maintain them without assistance, Garden Guardians is also a crime prevention project, working under the premise that a tidy garden acts as a deterrent to burglars and bogus callers. Jobs range from garden clearances to planting window boxes and the project is part funded by Awards for All.

Health Wise

Well-Being Supporters - Older volunteers offer time-limited one-to-one support to older people experiencing a difficult period, whether this is due to a fall, a spell in hospital or bereavement. Volunteers help the older person to regain their confidence and fitness and to re-connect to the world.

Health Road Shows - Twice yearly interactive Road Shows take place at different venues throughout Kensington and Chelsea and deal with many of the health issues that are relevant to older people. November 2007 sees the Healthy Homes Road Shows. For more information and venues, click here.

Well-being for Life - Well-being for Life is an annual health fair for older people managed and co-ordinated by Sixty Plus. Bringing all the key health and social care providers together along with a range of local and national charities, alternative therapists and businesses from the local community, Well-being for Life is the place to visit to learn about health and well-being among older people in Kensington and Chelsea. Well-being for Life 2007 took place on 6th October and was sponsored by CareUK. To find out more and to find out about getting involved, go to our Health Fair pages.

Arthritis Seminars - These enable individuals to take control of their health and develop strategies for coping with chronic conditions and disability. Dates and times are listed in our events page or are availabel from Lak on 0208 969 9105.

Intergenerational Project

Sixty Plus' Intergenerational Project uses young volunteers from local schools to support older people with a range of services. By bringing the generations together, the project aims to create relationships of mutual support and understanding. As well as our regular schemes which make a huge difference to older people's lives, Sixty Plus also runs a series of one-off projects.

The Reading Project - Young volunteers act as readers for visually impaired older people. Tasks range from reading for pleasure, help with everyday administration or even helping to transcribe memoirs. Many members are referred shortly after being registered blind and the volunteers can provide an essential support as they re-adjust.

Computer Project - The computer project uses young volunteers as computer coaches for older people. Aimed at people who are not able to go to classes due to frailty or because they do not have the confidence, the older person will set their own learning goals, whether learning to use the internet or using a digital camera. IT can offer a vital link to the outside world for many housebound people. Thanks to a grant from RBKC Adult and Community Learning, we are able to offer our users a range of adaptive technology to help with their learning.

English Language Support- This scheme matches an English speaking young volunteer with an older person looking for extra support to improve their spoken English. The emphasis is on everyday communication in natural situations.

Acting Up - Run in collaboration with Holland Park School, Theatre ADAD and the North Kensington Crime Prevention Team, Acting Up is a summer drama project bringing older and younger people together. The project runs for two weeks culminating in performances at the Electric Cinema in Portobello Road.

Greeting Card Project

Sixty Plus' card project is run by members for members. Birthday and Christmas cards are sent to all our members - which amounts to about 4,000 cards a year. The cards, recycled from old greetings cards, are all made by Cai Martinez who, as well as being a volunteer for Sixty Plus is also a member. Cai is helped by Theresa Chee who carries out the administrative side, choosing the card and making sure that it is sent off at the right time.

We always welcome donations of old birthday and Christmas cards.
