Intergenerational actors accepting the crowds’
applause following their performance at 50/58.

This year marks 50 years since Notting Hill was rocked by Race Riots in the summer of 1958. In order to investigate how far the community has come since then, a series of events have been planned to run throughout the year culminating in an event in 2009 to commemorate the murder of Kelso Cochrane in May 1959.

Sixty Plus members Ray Shaw and Charles Ward were lead actors amongst an intergenerational cast in a play which premiered at 50/58: A celebration of Diversity on 14th August. Organised by Golborne Ward Youth Forum it was a day to celebrate and showcase the talent of young people in north Kensington. The actors working with Hard Edge Theatre only had three weeks to devise, write and rehearse the play, so the pressure was on from day one. Together they created a poignant collection of interlinking stories based around a chance encounter on a train during the Notting Hill Riots.

24th July, 2008
Prime Minister salutes mentoring and befriending “heroes”

Sixty Plus Intergenerational volunteers working with older people to help with their computer skills were one of the examples of the intergenerational mentoring and befriending work praised by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Andrew Gardner and Asish Aryal (18) were among the mentors and befrienders at the Prime Minister’s 24/7 “Everyday Heroes” celebration at No. 10 Downing Street.

Andrew said: “Being a computer mentor has definitely made a positive difference to me. Not only have I discovered I can do things that I didn’t think I could do before, but it is really satisfying when I see that what I have taught is being used and makes her life much easier.
Meeting Gordon Brown himself was nerve racking but just a wonderful experience.”

Asish commented: “I think the event was a wonderful opportunity to meet other volunteers and to see how volunteering has changed our society.”

The Prime Minister spoke with high regard for the “unsung local heroes” involved in social action “when and wherever it takes place. I want to use 24/7 as a day to say thank you to all those who work so tirelessly for social change. We don’t report enough on the good things that people do – the volunteers we have in so many areas.”

Silver Surfers’ Day 2008

Friday 23 May was Silver Surfers’ Day, a national event at the end of Adult Learners Week designed to promote computer and internet use.

Sixty Plus held an event at Ormrod Court sheltered housing scheme in north Kensington to celebrate a new computer which one of our volunteers, Danny Lang, has built and donated to the residents at Ormrod Court.

There were taster sessions on digital photography, scanning and instant messaging, with volunteers on hand to provide assistance to setup email accounts and internet searches.

There was a lively atmosphere as people got to grips with new technologies and plenty of tea and cakes for those waiting to have a go.

Many special thanks to Sixty Plus intergenerational volunteers Danny Lang and Dominic Hunt.
